The National Construction Code, (NCC volume 2) and Victorian Building Authority (VBA) require alterations or extensions to meet minimum energy efficiency requirements.

For extensions or alterations under 50%, only the new area requires a minimum 7 star rating. Over 50% of the whole home (old and new) requires a minimum 7 star rating.
